Two-story homes have the living quarters divided between a main, or ground floor and a second floor above. Typically the general areas such as the living room, kitchen and dining room are located on the main floor and the bedrooms are located on the second floor. However, this layout can be switched to take advantage of views. Some people prefer the master bedroom be located on the second floor with the other bedrooms, some prefer the master bedroom on the main floor. Utility rooms with the washer and dryer can be located on the main floor, or on the second floor with the bedrooms, or both. A two-story home is one of the most traditional styles of homes, especially with the addition of a front porch. Two-story homes optimize the available square footage while minimizing the overall size of the 'footprint' of the home.
